If you get a good sized chunk of filter foam and pop it over the intake, as the water pressure is being spread far and wide due tot eh many holes in the sponge, it should reduce the flow giving the fish chance to get away from it. Panty hose will stop the fish being taken against the filter but not reduce the flow.
