If its that dirty take em apart and then clean the brass and once that's done put them back together. I wouldn't try cleaning them in a tumbler. That's just what I would do.

It's a mixture of chromium-oxide and aluminum-oxide that is designed to have a scratch size of about 0.5 mircons. Polishing the metal on the slide (with the extractor and firing pin out) makes the back of the cartridge feed up better.
